(1832-1904) UK poet, translator (mainly from Sanskrit) and journalist, editor of the Daily Telegraph from 1873; father of Edwin Lester Arnold. His blank-verse epic The Light of Asia, or The Great Renunciation (1879), an examination of the Buddha's life and philosophy, played a considerable role in popularizing such ideas. The Light of the World, or The Great Consummation (1891) is a similar account of the Christian Mythos. The Voyage of Ithobal (1901) is an Allegory. [BS]
