Brite, Poppy Z

Tagged: Author.

(1967-    ) US writer. Brite is known primarily as an author of Horror/Supernatural-Fiction novels and stories – with many of the latter being collected in the excellent Swamp Foetus (coll 1993). Here Brite's lush, atmospheric prose is shown to best effect in tales like "His Mouth Will Taste of Wormwood" and "Calcutta, Lord of Nerves". Rather less successful was Lost Souls (1992), a Vampire novel, in which the plotting was occasionally indistinct. Her second novel, Drawing Blood (1993), featured computer hacking, underground Comics and Birdland, a Secondary World suffused with noir; it boasts some of Brite's most inspired, fevered writing. Brite also co-edited (with Martin H Greenberg) Love in Vein (anth 1994), a well received anthology of erotic vampire stories. She won a 1994 British Fantasy Award as Best Newcomer. [WKS]

other works: His Mouth Will Taste of Wormwood (coll 1995 chap UK), 4 stories from Swamp Foetus.
