Bulfinch, Thomas

Tagged: Author.

(1796-1867) US recounter of Myths and Legends, a son of the architect Charles Bulfinch (1763-1844). He is best-known as the author of The Age of Fable (coll 1855), retelling Greek, Roman, Celtic, Scandinavian and Oriental tales. His The Age of Chivalry (coll 1858) recounts tales of Arthur and from the Mabinogion, while Legends of Charlemagne (coll 1863) repeats the exercise for that Hero. Bulfinch was a somewhat slipshod and certainly bowdlerizing writer; his importance is that he brought such material to the attention of general readers. [JG]

other works: Hebrew Lyrical History (coll 1853); Poetry of the Age of Fable (1863).
