Working name of US writer James Richard Cook (1944-2022), who began publishing work of genre interest with "Mortality" for Analog in 1987. He first came to fantasy notice with his Wizard series – Wizard's Bane (1989), The Wizardry Compiled (1989), The Wizardry Cursed (1991) and The Wizardry Consulted (1995) – which takes as Underlier figure the Boss in Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889), transporting a computer nerd into an Otherworld where he uses his programming knowledge to work a Technofantasy transformation on the art of Magic, defeats a Dark Lord or two, and wins his battles. Limbo System (1989) and Mall Purchase Night (1993) are perhaps less sustained, though the latter, set in a mall built along a line dividing this world from Faerie, engenders various comical Crosshatch encounters.
