de Bosschère, Jean

Tagged: Artist.

(1878-1953) Belgian poet, novelist, critic, painter, etcher and book illustrator. He is of most fantasy interest for his Illustrations, executed in a decorative line-and-black style influenced by Aubrey Beardsley and the Decadents (see Decadence), but with a firmer, more fluid line and a feeling for the grotesque. de Bosschère moved among the avant garde both in Brussels and, after 1915, in London: T S Eliot (1888-1965) and Ezra Pound (1885-1972) were friends. In addition to his often semi-abstract illustrations for his own works, he illustrated – in a more accessible manner – works by Honoré de Balzac, Boccaccio, Miguel de Cervantes and Gustave Flaubert.
