(1835-1885) French painter celebrated for his battle scenes and pictures of military life. A pupil of Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863), he was awarded the Légion d'Honneur in 1881 for "The Company of Saint-Privat" and "The Despatch-Bearer". He is best remembered for his numerous Illustrations for three of Jules Verne's most popular Voyages Extraordinaire, notably the "Nautilus" drawing in Vingt mille lieues sous la mer (1870). He contributed 45 illustrations to Autour de la Lune (1872) and 80 illustrations for Le tour de monde en quatre-vingt jours (1874). [RD]
