(1862-1943) UK artist, the foremost illustrator of sf in the pages of Pearson's Magazine 1896-1903. He contributed 66 illustrations to the original serialization of The War of the Worlds (1897; 1898) by H G Wells in Pearson's. Goble also illustrated several sf and fantasy stories by George Griffith (1857-1906) and Fred M White (1859-1935), as well as J Provand Webster's Lost-Race novel The Oracle of Baal: A Narrative of Some Curious Events in the Life of Professor Horatio Carmichael, M.D. (1896).

Goble abandoned sf illustration in 1903 to concentrate on Edmund Dulac-style colour-plate gift books. [RD]
