Halflings

Tagged: Theme.

Beings whose parentage is half-human and half-other, with no presumption that one half is inferior, wicked or cursed. For this reason, the term should probably not be used to describe hybrid beings in Supernatural Fiction or Horror, unless – as in Thomas M Disch's The Businessman (1984) – some irony or moral comment is implied. Most often, the parents of a halfling are an Elf and a human girl, and halflings are often found in Crosshatch venues. J R R Tolkien also used the term for his (non-crossbred) hobbits. [JC]
