(1920-2013) US moviemaker, particularly renowned for his skill in creating screen Monsters; he was also an animator. He served an apprenticeship with Willis H O'Brien (1886-1982) before taking charge of spfx for Mighty Joe Young (1949), followed by The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953), It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955) – his first movie done in conjunction with producer Charles H Schneer, with whom his partnership was virtually lifelong – Earth Versus the Flying Saucers (1956) and Twenty Million Miles to Earth (1957), for which he wrote the story. The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (1958) (see Sinbad Movies), The Three Worlds of Gulliver (1959; Gulliver Movies), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), One Million Years BC (1966) (see One Million Bc), The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973) (see Sinbad Movies) and Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977) (see Sinbad Movies) followed. By this time Harryhausen's spfx were looking increasingly creaky; Clash of the Titans (1981), yet again done with Schneer, was an overdue swansong. [JG]
