Hobson, [Sir] Harold
Tagged: Author.
(1904-1992) UK drama critic, active in that capacity from 1932 with Christian Science Monitor and then 1947-1976 for the London Sunday Times. His only fiction, The Devil in Woodford Wells: A Fantastic Novel (1946), is told in a manner deliberately reminiscent of Sir Max Beerbohm, even including a reference to Beerbohm's famous character Enoch Soames. Focusing on an early-nineteenth-century cricket match, the tale speculates on the role of the Devil in ruining a young man's career. [JC]
