(1918-2008) UK poet, novelist and teacher, who has spent many years abroad in the latter capacity. His first book, A Cosmic Shape: An Interpretation of Myth and Legend with Three Poems and Lyrics (coll 1946) with Ross Nichols, contains speculative nonfiction about the relationship between the fabulous and the mundane, plus several poems intended as illustrative. The True Mistery of the Passion (1961) is a fantasy about Christ's crucifixion. Queens Have Died Young and Fair: A Fable of the Immediate Future (1993) is a fantasy novel set in AD2001 on Liberalia, a newly discovered Atlantic Island. The plot, hyperbolically satirical of many subjects, is loosely based on William Shakespeare's The Tempest (performed circa 1611; 1623). Kirkup's translations include Erich Kästner's Der Kleine Mann (1963; trans as The Little Man 1966 UK) and Tales of Hoffmann (coll trans 1966) (see E T A Hoffmann). [JC]
