Knight, Eric

Tagged: Author.

(1897-1943) UK writer, novelist and cartoonist; his most famous book was Lassie Come Home (1940 US). Although he lived and worked largely in the USA, most of his stories and novels were set in his native Yorkshire. Before Lassie, his best-known creation was Sam Small, who first appeared in the satirical novella The Flying Yorkshireman (1936), in which Sam discovers that he can fly, thanks to the power of faith. Sam Small Flies Again (coll 1942; vt The Flying Yorkshireman 1946 US) contains further humorous fantasies – some of the best of their period. [RD]
