Manguel, Alberto

Tagged: Author.

(1948-    ) Argentine-Canadian anthologist and fiction-writer. Jorge Luis Borges left a mark on the young Manguel, who worked as a writer and editor in Milan and Tahiti before moving in 1982 to Toronto, where he was active as a cultural journalist. In 1993 he moved to Alsace; he currently lives in Paris. With Gianni Guadalupi he wrote The Dictionary of Imaginary Places (1980; exp 1987), which offers detailed descriptions, as if for the traveller, of realms that exist in writers' imaginations. Manguel's encyclopedic knowledge of Latin American literature (see Latin America), his catholic tastes, his concern for new fiction writers from Canada and elsewhere as well as his translations from the Romance languages all inform the large anthologies Black Water: The Anthology of Fantastic Literature (anth 1983) and Black Water II: Further Fantastic Literature (anth 1990). Other theme anthologies are The Oxford Book of Canadian Ghost Stories (anth 1991). His sole novel, News from a Foreign Country Came (1991), is nonfantasy. [JRC]
