Millais, [Sir] John Everett
Tagged: Artist.
(1829-1896) UK artist, a central member – along with his mentors William Holman Hunt (1827-1910) and Dante Gabriel Rossetti – of the Preraphaelites. His "Ophelia" (1852) is the first of many florid Preraphaelite portrayals of the drowning of Hamlet's betrothed. In general his subject matters have little to do with the language or movement of fantasy; he is of interest, and his influence is most evident, for the superb moody tangibility of his Landscapes. Those featured in "The Blind Girl" (1856) and "Autumn Leaves" (1856), for instance, seem to evoke Land-of-Fable medieval worlds, whose foregrounds later illustrators glady filled with Icons of the Otherworld.
