(1936-2022) Polish-born illustrator, in the UK from 1946, initially active in theatre design; he began to illustrate children's books with Annie, Bridge and Charlie (1967) by Jessie Gertrude Townsend, immediately following this with his first illustrations for a work of fantasy interest, A Necklace of Raindrops (coll 1968) by Joan Aiken. Further Aiken books he illustrated include The Kingdom Under the Sea (coll 1971), Tale of a One-Way Street (coll 1978), Past Eight O'Clock (coll 1986) and A Foot in the Grave (coll 1989). He has composed several illustrated books for younger children. His illustrations almost invariably present figures in black silhouette against vivid backgrounds. [JC]
