Precognition

Tagged: Theme.

The Talent for seeing glimpses of the future (see Prophecy); it differs from Scrying in that mind-focusing devices like crystal balls are generally not required. Often precognition comes in brief, unexpected flashes which make sense only in hindsight. Thus the young hero of Diana Wynne Jones's Power of Three (1976), who has the "Gift of Sight Unasked", can give no reason for the dire warning he utters; it goes unheeded, like the prophecies of Cassandra in Greek Mythology (see Oracles). In Randall Garrett's Too Many Magicians (1967) a minimal precognitive talent – seeing only seconds into the future – makes its owner a deadly Sword-fighter. [DRL]
