Renault, Mary

Tagged: Author.

Pseudonym of UK historical novelist Mary Challans (1905-1983), long resident in South Africa. A few of her books are Rationalized Fantasies based on Legends. They include The King Must Die (1958) and The Bull from the Sea (1962), concerning Theseus and the Minotaur, with the former also bearing on the notion of the Year King (see Golden Bough) – these two assembled as The King Must Die/The Bull from the Sea (omni 1992) – and The Persian Boy (1972), which lightly fantasticates the life of Alexander the Great. These novels can be read as straight fantasies because of Renault's ability to portray the world plausibly via her protagonists' Perception, which differs from a modern one. [JG]
