(1945-2011) US writer of YA books, many sf or fantasy. Blackbriar (1972), Sleator's first book, is fantasy, as is Among the Dolls (1975 chap), but he soon began to specialize in sf, which accounts for most of his oeuvre. Fingers (1983) is a supernatural thriller, while The Spirit House (1991) and its sequel, Dangerous Wishes (1995), make use of Thai gods and the theme of unwise bargains. All dramatize vividly the anxieties of children, for whom supernatural threats can be essentially intensifications of the terrors of a disconcerting world. [GF]

other works: Others See Us (1993), a novel of telepathy.
