Smith, Arthur D Howden

Tagged: Author.

(1887-1945) US writer of adventure stories for the pulp Magazines. Smith's fantastic series, beginning with ("The Forging" 1926 Adventure), involved the Gray Maiden, a blood-loving Sword forged during the reign of the Pharaoh Thutmose III and quenched in the blood of one he loves and one he hates. The stories have weak characterizations but are thoroughly researched and conclude with copious bloodshed; six were collected in Grey [sic] Maiden: The Story of a Sword through the Ages (coll 1929); additional stories remain uncollected. Gray Maiden stands as a direct ancestor to such works as Jaan Kangilaski's Seeking Sword sequence and as a relative of other stories featuring uncanny Weapons – like Stormbringer in Michael Moorcock's Elric series.
