(1953-    ) US writer and artist, married to Don Maitz. Her first novel, Sorcerer's Legacy (1982; rev 1989), is in traditional Fantasyland vein. The Cycle of Fire trilogy – Stormwarden (1984), Keeper of the Keys (1988) and Shadowfane (1988) – mixes sf with Magic. The Empire trilogy, with Raymond E FeistDaughter of the Empire (1987), Servant of the Empire (1990) and Mistress of the Empire (1992) – is set in a fantasticated Byzantine Empire. The Master of Whitestorm (1992) is another Fantasyland singleton. The Wars of Light and ShadowsThe Curse of the Mistwraith (1993) and The Ships of Merior (1994), the latter's two halves having been widely published separately as The Ships of Merior and Warhost of Vastmark (1995) – concerns the adventures of two half-brothers, one controlling the power of light, the other the power of shadow. That Way Lies Camelot (coll 1994) mixes sf and fantasy stories, some originally written for shared-world anthologies. Wurts has produced effective cover paintings for several of her own books. [DP]
